Southam is a market town in the Stratford-on-Avon district of Warwickshire. It is located on the River Stowe, called ‘The Brook’ by locals, and is about 7.5 miles east-southeast of Leamington Spa. It had a population of 6,567 at the 2011 Census.
Southam was a royal manor until 998 AD, when Ethelred the Unready granted it to Earl Leofwine. The Domesday Book records the manor as ‘Sucham’, and it’s not clear when it changed its name. The current manor house is a Grade II* listed building and dates back to the early 17th century.
In the medieval era, the town minted its own currency because the locals found that regular English currency was too high in value for their use. In the English Civil War, Charles I used Southam’s mint to make new coins to pay his troops. Charles I passed through the town just before the outbreak of the war and the locals refused to ring the parish church bells to welcome him.
Southam is largely a commuter town now thanks to its road links and proximity to Leamington Spa and Rugby (10 miles). The town is relatively built-up with shops in the town centre and small estates in cul-de-sacs and closes gathered around the main high street and recreation ground.
