Hailsham is a civil parish and the largest of the five towns that form the Wealden district of East Sussex. With a population of just over 20000 and around 8500 residential properties, it is also the largest inland town in East Sussex. Hailsham lies 7 miles north of Eastbourne, 19 miles south of Tunbridge Wells, 14 miles west of Hastings and 11 miles east of the town of Lewes. Hailsham’s classic industry was rope making. Despite the drop-off of the market, light industry continues in two large industrial estates located in the town. The Heritage Centre in Blackman’s Yard, run by members of the Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society, allows visitors to access the town’s past through the use of images and artefacts. Screens showing kitchens, farming, agriculture, regional industry and wartime souvenirs attempt to offer a sense of the town’s history over the past hundred years.
