Where we can assist
Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire and lies in the West Midlands region adjacent to the M6 motorway. The community, with a people of 55,700, is the fourth largest settlement in the area, behind Stoke, Tamworth and Newcastle under Lyme.
The initial Stafford settlement was on completely dry sand and crushed rock peninsula that offered a crossing point in the valley of the River Sow, a tributary of the River Trent. There is still a great deal of marshland northwest of the town, which is frequently subject to flooding. It’s thought that Stafford was founded around AD 700 by a Mercian prince called Bertelin that started a hermitage on the peninsula called Betheney. Until just recently, it was assumed that the remains of a wooden cross from this time had been found under the remains of St. Bertelin’s chapel. After re-examination, it emerged that it was really a tree-trunk casket placed in the timber chapel in around AD 913, possibly as an item of ceremony or veneration of St Bertelin.
