Wingham is a village in the Dover District of Kent. It lies along the ancient coastal road from Richborough to London, now the A257, and is approximately 8 miles from Canterbury. There has been a settlement at Wingham since the Stone Age, but it only became established as a village in Roman times; the Domesday Book notes that during Saxon times the Archbishop of Canterbury was in possession of Wingham Manor.
The town of Wingham in New South Wales was settled in 1841 and was named after the village; it was originally set out in a similar way, although the Australian town is now much bigger. The village is also twinned with Vert-le-Grand, a commune in the Île-de-France region of north-central France.
The village is mainly a dormitory town for Sandwich and Canterbury. There are a few shops, a post office, restaurants and pubs, some of which are in listed buildings. North-east of the village is Wingham Wildlife Park, a zoo that is home to animals such as tigers, penguins, lemurs, meerkats, monkeys and reindeer.
Wingham’s local county council are resistant to much development in the village; recent developments include a small number of houses that were built by the Rural Housing Trust in December 2007. There were proposals to expand the development by another 20 houses, but these were rejected.
